ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME…

Updated: Sep 17, 2021

THE COLOSSEUM, AN ICONIC SYMBOL OF ROME. THIS IS WHERE OUR STORY BEGINS. I HAVE ONLY BEEN BACK THROUGH THE ANCIENT ARENA A HANDFUL OF TIMES, MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY STARTED CHARGING ADMISSION. OH, AND ACTORS POSING AS SPARTANS ARE VERY SKILLED AT CONVINCING YOU A PICTURE WITH HIM IN FRONT OF THE COLOSSEUM WILL MAKE YOU THE ENVY OF ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS. I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT THEY ARE THAT CHARMING.

EACH TIME I HAVE BEEN INSIDE, I FIND MYSELF WANDERING THROUGHOUT THE RUINS IN SEARCH OF MY PARENT’S NAME. THAT FATEFUL DAY WHEN THEY MET, THE TWO OF THEM CARVED THEIR NAMES INTO A STONE WALL. I IMAGINE THE NEWNESS OF STANDING NEXT TO EACHOTHER, THE BUTTERFLIES I’M SURE MY MOTHER HAD SWIRLING IN HER STOMACH AND THE DREAD THAT THE DATE WOULD SOON COME TO AN END, BUT NOT WANTING TO SAY GOODBYE. MY FATHER ALWAYS WAXED POETIC ABOUT HER BEAUTY, EVEN AT FIFTEEN. AND ALTHOUGH THE HEARTBREAK OF WAR AGED HER, HE MUST HAVE UNDERSTOOD THE SADNESS IN HER EYES. HE HAD ALREADY SEEN THE CRUELNESS OF WARTIME, HAD ALREADY BURIED FRIENDS, HAD ALREADY GOTTEN USED TO THE SMELL OF DEATH IN THE AIR. BUT THEY SOMEHOW FOUND COMFORT IN EACHOTHER.

I PLAN ON GOING TO ROME AGAIN THIS SUMMER AND MAYBE I’LL RESIST THE GAMBIT OF HANDSOME, SHIRTLESS SPARTAN MEN AND GO TO THE COLOSSEUM. IF I DO, I WILL SEARCH AGAIN FOR MY PARENT’S NAMES, BUT I STRONGLY DOUBT I WILL FIND THEM.

SE NO HA PIANTO, I TUOI OCCHI NON POSSONO ESSERE BELLI

IF YOU HAVEN’T CRIED, YOUR EYES CAN’T BE BEAUTIFUL…
